How to Use Vitamin C Serum for Real Results

Contents

By Svetlana Kolganov, founder of Beauty Balance

Vitamin C is the ingredient I recommend for the morning to almost every client. Still, I often hear: “I don't see a difference.” Usually the serum isn't the problem. The way it's used is: the wrong order, too little sun protection or a serum that oxidized long ago. Here I'll show you how to use vitamin C the right way and which serum suits your skin.

    Key takeaways

    • Apply in the morning after cleansing, before cream and sunscreen.
    • Three to four drops are enough for face, neck and décolleté.
    • The best way to combine it with retinol: vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night.
    • If the serum turns clearly yellow or brown, it has oxidized and barely works anymore.

What vitamin C does for your skin

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It neutralizes free radicals caused by sun, pollution and stress, which make skin look tired and dull. With regular use, your complexion looks fresher and more even, dark spots visibly fade and your skin looks firmer. Together with sunscreen, it boosts your protection against environmental stress.

Which form of vitamin C suits you?

Serums contain vitamin C in different forms. They differ in how strong they are, how stable they are and how well sensitive skin tolerates them.

    FormWhat makes it specialBest for
L-ascorbic acidThe pure, strongest form. Works fast and may tingle a little at first.Skin that tolerates active ingredients well
Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbateOil-soluble, very stable and gentle. Absorbs well.Mature and dry skin, beginners
Magnesium ascorbyl phosphateWater-soluble and mild, often combined with other forms.Sensitive skin
Ester-CFat-soluble compound, well tolerated.Normal to sensitive skin

Using the serum every morning matters more than the highest percentage. 10 to 20% is a good range. More doesn't automatically mean better results, but it often means more irritation.

My vitamin C serum picks for your skin

For beginners and sensitive skin. Gentle forms that even reactive skin tolerates well.

For more radiance and firmness. High concentrations for skin that is used to active ingredients.

For pigment spots and a dull complexion. Vitamin C combined with brightening ingredients.

For the eye area. Lighter textures for the delicate skin around your eyes.

You'll find every serum in our collection of vitamin C serums.

How to apply vitamin C the right way

    1. Cleanse. In the morning, a mild cleanser or lukewarm water is enough.
    2. Apply to dry skin. Spread three to four drops between your palms and press them onto your face, neck and décolleté.
    3. Let it absorb briefly. One minute is enough.
    4. Moisturize. Then apply your day cream. If your skin is dry, add a hyaluronic serum before it.
    5. Sunscreen. Every morning, even when it's cloudy. Only together with sunscreen does vitamin C give you its full protection.

Vitamin C serum: morning or night?

Morning. Vitamin C protects your skin from environmental stress during the day, exactly when it's exposed to it. You can also use it at night if you don't use retinol. What matters is that you apply it regularly.

What you can combine with vitamin C

    Sunscreen is a must

Vitamin C and sunscreen are a team. These four are my favorites over a vitamin C serum:

How to tell your serum is still good

Pure vitamin C reacts with light and air. A fresh serum is clear to slightly yellowish. If it turns clearly yellow, orange or brown, it has oxidized and barely works anymore. So keep it tightly closed, dark and cool, and use it up within about three months of opening. Oil-soluble forms like tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate are much more stable.

    What's normal at the start

With L-ascorbic acid, your skin may tingle briefly during the first few days. This usually settles after one to two weeks. If your skin struggles with it, start every other morning or choose a gentler form. If your skin burns strongly or stays red, stop using the serum and write to us.

    FAQ

    When will I see results?
Many people notice a fresher complexion after two to four weeks. For dark spots, give it about eight to twelve weeks.

Can I use vitamin C in summer?
Yes, especially then. It adds to your sunscreen, but it doesn't replace it.

    Which concentration is right?
10 to 15% to start, up to 20% for experienced skin. Higher is rarely better tolerated.

Is vitamin C suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, in a gentle form like the one in VITAL C Hydrating Anti-Aging Serum or Pro-Heal Serum Advance+.
