Retinol for Beginners: How to Start Right

Contents

By Svetlana Kolganov, founder of Beauty Balance

Retinol is the ingredient customers ask me about most. And almost always with the same worry: will my skin turn red, dry, flaky? The honest answer: at first, it can. With the right strength and a clear plan, though, it stays mild and temporary. Here I show you how to start, which products suit each stage and what your skin needs alongside.

    The essentials

    • Start with 0.1 to 0.3% retinol, two to three evenings a week.
    • Use it only in the evening, and always wear sunscreen in the morning.
    • First changes appear after four to six weeks, clearer ones after about three months.

    What is retinol?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. In the skin it is converted into its active form and stimulates renewal of the top layer. Over time skin looks smoother, fine lines recede, pores look finer and the complexion more even. Related forms such as retinal or retinyl palmitate differ in strength and tolerance.

At what age is retinol worth it?

Many people start in their late twenties or early thirties, when the first fine lines appear. Starting at 40, 50 or later makes sense too. What matters is not your age but starting slowly and watching how your skin responds.

    Which strength suits you?

I divide retinol into three stages. Stay at each stage until your skin has tolerated the product for several weeks without tightness or flaking. Only then move up.

Stage 1: Getting started. Low concentration, gentle formulas. Ideal if you are new to retinol or have sensitive skin.

Stage 2: Stepping up. For skin that tolerates stage 1 well. Choose a serum if you like it light, or a cream if your skin tends to be dry.

Stage 3: Experienced. Higher concentrations for skin that has tolerated retinol for months.

    How to use retinol

    1. Use it in the evening. Skin is more sensitive to light during the day.
    2. Apply to dry skin. After cleansing, wait briefly, then spread a pea-sized amount over face and neck. Avoid the eye area, the sides of the nose and the corners of the mouth.
    3. Follow with a moisturizer. For sensitive skin you can apply the cream first. That makes retinol gentler.
    4. Sunscreen in the morning. Every day, even in winter.

Your plan for the first weeks

    PeriodHow oftenWhat to watch for
Weeks 1 to 22 evenings a weekSlight dryness is normal. Use rich care.
Weeks 3 to 4Every other eveningIf skin stays calm, keep increasing.
From week 5Daily, if it goes wellMove up a stage only after several weeks without tightness.

    What is normal at first

In the first two to six weeks, skin may be a little drier, flake slightly or tingle briefly. This shows it is getting used to the ingredient. Use retinol less often and nourish more. If your skin burns strongly or stays red, stop using retinol and ask us for advice.

What your skin needs alongside retinol

Retinol works best in a routine that protects and calms the skin. These are the products I like to pair with it:

Peptides also pair well with retinol. See our peptide skincare and vitamin C serums. Use fruit acid peels and retinol on different evenings.

    When to avoid retinol

Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor before using vitamin A products during this time.

    FAQ

How long until I see results?
First changes often show after four to six weeks, clearer ones after about three months of regular use.

Can I use retinol in summer?
Yes, if you wear sunscreen consistently. Many people still prefer to start in autumn or winter.

    Retinol serum or retinol cream?
Serums are lighter and often more concentrated. Creams also nourish and are often more comfortable for dry or mature skin.

Is retinol suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, with the lowest strength, less frequent use and a cream applied first. The Trial Kit is a good start.
