Strengthen Your Skin Barrier and Calm Your Skin

Contents

By Svetlana Kolganov, founder of Beauty Balance

Many clients come to me with skin that suddenly reacts to everything. It stings with the cream they've used for years, feels tight after washing and is dry and shiny at the same time. Almost always, a weakened skin barrier is behind it. Often the problem isn't too little care, but too much. Here I'll show you how to recognize a stressed barrier and how to calm it down again in just a few weeks.

    Key takeaways

    • Less is more: pause retinol, acids and exfoliants until your skin is calm.
    • Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids rebuild the barrier.
    • Mild cleansing and lukewarm water instead of hot.
    • After two to four weeks, your skin usually feels much better.

    What is the skin barrier?

Picture the top layer of your skin as a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, and the lipids between them are the mortar. This mortar is made mainly of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. It keeps moisture in and irritants out. On top of that, there's the slightly acidic protective layer and the microorganisms on your skin. When the mortar has gaps, water evaporates and irritants get in more easily.

Signs of a weakened skin barrier

    • Your skin feels tight after cleansing.
    • Products you normally tolerate well sting or tingle.
    • Redness and rough, flaky patches.
    • Your skin is dry and oily at the same time.
    • Makeup settles into dry patches.

    The most common causes

    • Too many active ingredients: retinol, acids and high-dose vitamin C all at once.
    • Over-cleansing: foaming cleansers, hot water, several times a day.
    • Exfoliating too often, whether with scrubs or acids.
    • Weather: cold outside and dry heated air inside.
    • Sun, stress and too little sleep.

Your plan for the next few weeks

    Time frameWhat you do
Weeks 1 to 2Pause retinol, acids and exfoliants. Mild cleansing, a barrier cream morning and night, sunscreen in the morning.
Weeks 3 to 4Once your skin is calm, bring back one active ingredient, starting with two evenings a week.
From week 5Increase slowly. Only introduce one new product at a time.

Mild cleansers. They cleanse without washing away your lipids.

Barrier creams for every day. With ceramides and skin-like lipids.

For stressed moments and the night. When your skin needs extra protection.

You'll find more care for reactive skin under Sensitive Skin.

    Ingredients that strengthen the barrier

    IngredientWhat it does
CeramidesThe most important building block of the “mortar”. They close the gaps between skin cells.
Cholesterol and fatty acidsComplement the ceramides. All three work best together.
NiacinamideEncourages your skin to make more ceramides on its own, and soothes.
    PanthenolHydrates and soothes stressed skin.
Hyaluronic acidBinds water in the skin. You'll find a selection among our hyaluronic serums.
Squalane and plant oilsMake skin supple and reduce moisture loss.

What to avoid during this time

    • Hot water, sauna heat directly on your face and long baths.
    • Toners with alcohol, essential oils and strong fragrances.
    • Scrubs, brushes and rough towels. Pat your skin dry instead.
    • A new product every week. Give your skin time.

    FAQ

How long does it take to rebuild the skin barrier?
Many people feel a first improvement after a few days. It usually takes two to six weeks until the barrier is stable again.

Can I use retinol again afterwards?
Yes, slowly and at a low strength. I explain how in Retinol for Beginners: How to Start Right.

Does oily skin need barrier care too?
Yes. Oily skin in particular is often over-cleansed. In that case, choose a lighter cream with ceramides.

Is hyaluronic acid enough on its own?
No. Hyaluronic acid binds water, but without lipids it evaporates again. It's best to use a hyaluronic serum and a barrier cream together.
